چکیده

[1] We analyzed dSi of dissolved silicate for eight water column profiles across the Southern Ocean (south of Australia in spring 2001) from the Seasonal Ice Zone (SIZ) north to the Subantarctic Zone (SAZ), including the first isotopic compositions measured for Si-depleted seawaters. All profiles display mixed layer enrichments in heavy Si isotopes relative to deep water in accordance with preferential uptake of the light isotope by diatoms. As silicate levels decrease from the SIZ northward across the Polar Front Zone (PFZ) to the SAZ, surface and mesopelagic dSi signatures generally become progressively heavier, but the most Si-depleted SAZ waters do not exhibit dSi values heavier than in the PFZ. This intricacy appears to derive from variations in the vertical and horizontal supply of silicate to surface waters, and by applying a steady state open system model, we estimate a fractionation factor, e, between diatoms and seawater of 0.45 ± 0.17%, independently of zones and phytoplankton community. Though encouraging, these results are related to latitudinal changes in mesopelagic dSi values, complexity in surface silicate dSi correlations, and differences from previous studies, which underline the need for caution in the use of silicon isotopes in paleoceanographic studies until systematic efforts have been undertaken to better understand modern variations.

Silicon isotopes indicate enhanced carbon export efficiency in the North Atlantic during deglaciation.

Today's Sargasso Sea is nutrient starved, except for episodic upwelling events caused by wind-driven winter mixing and eddies. Enhanced diatom opal burial in Sargasso Sea sediments indicates that silicic acid, a limiting nutrient today, may have been more available in subsurface waters during Heinrich Stadials, millennial-scale climate perturbations of the last glacial and deglaciation. Here we...

Silicon (Si) is one of the beneficial elements for plants, which improves quantity and quality of yield, decreases evaporation and transpiration and enhances plant resistance to abiotic stresses. In order to evaluate the effect of Si and nano-silicon (N-Si) on growth, morphological and photosynthesis attributes of tomato, cultivar Falcato, an experiment was carried out in a hydroponic system, ...

Evidence for a major change in silicon cycling in the subarctic North Pacific at 2.73 Ma

[1] The initiation of Northern Hemisphere glaciation in the subarctic North Pacific at 2.73 Ma was marked by an abrupt cessation of high opaline accumulation, considered to result from an increased stratification of the water column that should have led to higher utilization of nutrients in the surface ocean. We present a new stable Si isotope-based record of Si utilization that is hard to reco...

Silicon (Si) has beneficial effects on the growth, yield, and tolerance of some crops against biotic and abiotic stresses. Considering the absence of Si in the nutrient solutions used in hydroponically-grown cucumber, the present study was conducted to investigate the influence of Si on the growth and yield of two cucumber genotypes (Cucumis sativus L. cvs. Dominus GRC and Super Dominus). In a ...

Silicon (Si) has not been considered as an essential nutrient for plant growth however, it has been shown that supplying crops with adequate Si can improve environmental stress tolerance. On the other hand, exposure to toluene, as a hazardous organic pollutant widely found in the water resources, is an environmental stress for plants growing around many industries. The aim of this nutrient solu...
